The Ballad of Mott the Hoople
UK
105mins
2010
Certificate: ‘15’
Directors: Chris Hall and Mike Kerry

This screening will be introduced by co-director Chris Hall and local music writer DJ Daryl Easlea

There were many remarkable things about Mott the Hoople’s celebrated reunion concerts in 2009, not least that the band hadn’t played together for 35 years, some members hadn’t spoken to each other for 30 - and they were all still around, 40 years later! This remarkable documentary presents their story with passion and affection, with Ian Hunter revealed as a dazzling raconteur, displaying total recall. Archive footage, much of it extremely rare, shows the band in their 70s pomp, with hits such as ‘All the Young Dudes’, ‘Roll Away the Stone’ and ‘All the Way to Memphis’ showing what a singular band they were

Chris Hall has long been fascinated by the mercurial career of Mott the Hoople, the most famous band to come out of Hereford. As he says, "They always seemed to be veering between success and disaster on a fairly regular basis."

Daryl Easlea is a music writer, CD compiler, DJ and former Saturday boy in the record department at WH Smith in Southend. A regular contributor to Mojo, bbc.co.uk and Record Collector, he has written books on Chic, Sparks, and The Supremes. He was a talking head on the Mott The Hoople Under Review DVD and claims he stood in the background gurning while someone was having their photo taken with Ian Hunter at the 2008 Classic Rock Awards!
