An extremely audacious film for its time, this tackles, head on, the problem of paedophilia. The young daughter of an English couple who have recently migrated to a small town in Canada is apparently abused by the local patriarch who, because of his standing in the community, is considered beyond reproach. The extremely literate script avoids sensationalism while not shying away from the more unsavoury aspects, and the film builds to a grim and disturbing climax.
We are delighted that actress Janina Faye will be introducing this screening.

Janina2005Janina Faye was a prolific child actress, appearing in dozens of films and plays and many television shows from the mid-1950s. Big screen appearances included Hammer’s classic horror films Dracula and The Two Faces of Doctor Jekyll, as well as The Day of the Triffids and Never Take Sweets from a Stranger. She now concentrates on teaching acting, but, in 1999, she appeared in Green Fingers, a short horror film made by Southend Film Festival director Paul Cotgrove.
