SILENT COMEDY EXTRAVAGANZA!

Approximate running time 75mins

11AM : PARK INN BY RADISSON PALACE BALLROOM

TICKETS £7.00

Festival favourite Adam Ramet, from the Piano Pavilion, Chalkwell, will provide live accompaniment to a wonderful selection of short comedies from the silent era. Expect laughs, thrills and madcap chases galore - all presented on 'real' film!

A Night in the Show (1915): Charlie Chaplin, as the aptly-named Mr. Pest, causes havoc while attending a theatre.

It's a Gift (1923): Snub Pollard is an eccentric inventor who has discovered a replacement for gasoline - with spectacular consequences!

Smile Please (1924): Doubling up as the town's sheriff and photographer, Harry Langdon has to track down an arsonist - while doing the best he can with distinctly unphotogenic in-laws!

A Wireless Lizzie (1926): Another inventor proudly shows off the automatic remote control he has installed in his jalopy. But when he sets out to impress a potential buyer, a rival switches the plugs, and the test drive doesn't quite go according to plan!

Aping the Law (1930): Years before the Brooke Bond chimps, there were the 'Tiffany Chimps' comedies. This sees them 'way out West'.

Directed by Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne

11AM : PARK INN BY RADISSON PALACE ROYAL VIEW SUITE

TICKETS £7.00

At about 11, the stubborn and impulsive Cyril seems on his way to delinquency: he has no mother and his father, wanting a new life without him, leaves him in a children’s home. Undaunted, he searches for his father, wanting him and also his bike.  Samantha, a hairdresser Cyril happens upon, helps him and offers him a home for the weekends. But he remains aloof and, once he’s got his bike back, he gets involved with a young crook. His future does not look promising.

The directors draw wonderful performances from their entire cast, but Belgian actor Thomas Doret excels as the conflicted Cyril. No wonder this affecting and gripping drama won the Grand Prize of the Jury at the Cannes Film Festival.

DYING BREED

UK : 86mins : 2017

Directed by Mick Catmull

1.30PM : PARK INN BY RADISSON PALACE ROYAL VIEW SUITE  TICKETS £7.00

For 12 months Mick Catmull followed farmers at work on three small cattle farms in west Cornwall, capturing a way of life under threat from retail giants and modern agribusiness. The family farm has been part of the Cornish landscape since time immemorial - but for how much longer?

Beautifully filmed through the ever changing seasons, the film gently, but unflinchingly, examines the way of life, motivation and challenges faced by these farmers – a dying breed. It moves from calves being born,  kicking up their heels on their first day in the great outdoors, running through the fields (“the fresh air gets to them”) then to the market and the passing of life.

It is a moving tribute to a way of life which is passing us by. This powerful film will cause you to think about life and its true value. Officially selected for the Leipzig International Documentary Festival.
